Humans and Magic
Magic is innate to Dragons, but for humans they are only just beginning to understand it. Thus, their capabilities are very limited. If one can use magic at all, it is very basic--such as conjuring a small flame to use for light or to ignite a campfire. One could learn more advanced magic, but the information needed to do so is extremely hard to come by. Such information is reserved for people of status or the very wealthy. But once that information is obtained, it would take a long time of study--many years--to learn more advanced spells. This is stated in the New Members Guide: Lore
Humans must study magic to the age of 40 to learn one spell. That may seem like a long time, but you must remember that humans are not adept at magic like Dragons. However, the time can be halved if they happen to acquire a red Moonstone or a Dragon tutor. Please be aware that the red Moonstone is the rarest of the Moonstones and it is unlikely that a Dragon would just teach you magic. Neither method is totally impossible to come by, but it's more likely you'll have to take the long way around to get your human able to perform magic. After your human has reached the age of 40, additional spells may be purchased with DP. More advanced spells like shapeshifting may cost more than the normal amount for major abilities.
Further explanation on having a red Moonstone and/or Dragon tutor
A Moonstone, especially the very rare red one, helps one understand what they read or hear about magic. All of us in math probably had to do the same thing over and over again to understand how to do stuff like long division or percentage conversions. A red Moonstone will help you understand on the first few tries but you need someone to tell you what you need to be doing and humans in general don't know what they are doing. So it's like learning math without a math book or a teacher. Now add a magic adept dragon into the equation and you got someone who knows what they are doing. The two combined, teacher and Moonstone, are very effective. Imagine you had a math Moonstone in school that helped you understand everything on the first few tries how quickly you'd be into advance calculus and stuff your teacher wouldn't even know.
Magic is innate to dragons so they can learn magic even without a teacher. But obviously having one will make it faster. Also dragons have a very large magic energy pool. There are things that humans will never be able do.
Additonal Note: Humans can have a total of 3 magic abilities.

Actually a dragon tutor will more than half it. I'm going to compare this to being like learning math. A moonstone specially the very rare red one helps one understand what they read or hear about magic. All of us in math probobly had to do the same thing over and over again to understand how to do stuff like long division or percentage conversions.
