The Odyssey of the Manticore (Open) Empty The Odyssey of the Manticore (Open)

Post by Servius Thu Aug 11, 2016 1:19 pm

Servius Eirene Koinonia moved through the forest under a changing sky as dawn approached. The blackness of night faded to the dark blue of a lake, then to the light of robin eggs. The sun peeked over the horizon and birds sang. The birds were the only ones brave enough to be around at this time of day; everyone else knew better. Dawn belonged to the Eater of Humans, the Manticore. Servius stopped mid step and looked around. The world was forever silent to him; no birds sang. Instead, he looked for signs of movement, tasted the air for the location of his breakfast. The longer Servius stood here, the more dew clung to his paws and legs... he continued walking again. He was near the edge of the forest and the Human settlements were furtther in. The Manticore would not feast on Human flesh this morning. Of course, he could always turn around, go back, but this forest was no longer his home and Humans no longer resided here. This vast territory belonged to the Dragons now. Those wretched reptiles... these weren't even the same who orignially owned the land... they were FireWings and NightWings or some such thing. It didn't matter. They were thieves as far as the Manticore was concerned. Thanks to them, Servius could no longer snack upon the hordes of Humans that once lived here. Of course he ate other things, but he immensely enjoyed these plentiful snacks. But worse still, the glorified iguanas had claimed his home for themselves, the selfish beasts. If anyone deserved the territory, it was the Manticores... not that Servius was keen to share anythinig with his traitorus kin.

The brutish, winged lion with a scorpion's tail did not look back as he stepped out of the forest and into the open land before it. But this would not be his to claim, either. No, those Dragons had claimed this as well, as if the greatest prize had not been enough. Who were they to fill their bellies, the gluttons, while the wronged were forced to fight for scraps? Ah, they were the "superior" beings... the Manticore and every other non-Dragon had been deemed "lesser". What gave them the right? Had not Shardas created them all? Perhaps it didn't matter; superior as they thought they were, the Dragons died just as the Manticores had. At least the Mantcores survived, if just barely. But Servius was alone in the world. His Pride was long gone, fell by the Humans he once gorged on in the forest. The sun was higher now, it rays were warmer, but the dew would cling to Servius' pelt a little longer. It was a little early for flying, the air was still cold, but he didn't want to spend all day walking across land that smelled of ash and swamp. Dragons, such smelly creatures. Had they never heard of a bath? The Manticore opened his large, learthery, bat-like wings and beat them until he was no longer touching the damp ground. He climbed higher until the sun's rays could touch him. The Manticore made his way to the south, toward the sea, in search of new hunting grounds and a home to claim.

The Manticore  had not been graced by Shardas with great speed. A mere 30mph was as fast as this great predator could go. But he did not use this speed now, there was  no need. He wanted to enjoy the growing warrmth of the rising sun for as long as possible. But it was hard to enjoy anything when one's stomach screamed at them for food, like a bird's hatchlings. And if they failed to fill their stomach with delicious moist, wet food in a timely manner, it became more persistent. Now, every couple of mintues--if they're lucky--their stomach claws and stabs at them. If you're strong willed--and bravo to you for having been born with the strength of a god--you can ignore this mauling and feed your whinning belly whenever you so please. But if the being is not so fortunate, they will ultimately give in to the supreme power that is their stomach and fill it immediately. Fortunately, our Manticore was not to be contolled by any being, including his own stomach. Besides, this early in the morning, there was not much roaming the open plains; everything worth hunting was in the forest. So Servius flew on and surveyed the world below for a suitable home.

By mid-morning, Servius had come only a few hours flight from the sea.  He was above an open plain, where few trees stood and the beach could be seen if you were an EarthWIng--too bad there were none of those left. The grass was tall and lush and rolled with the winds, mimicing the open oceans. The Manticore dove down from the clouds to fly as high as the trees. His eyes scanned the area for prey, but all they found was a Dragon-like creature. It was looking at the sky as if something had startled it. Servius could see its mouth moving. 'Hello! Who's there?' Servius frowned. The creature appeared Dragon-like, but perhaps it wasn't... Would it hurt to find out at least? The Manticore circled around then landed several feet away from the creature.

Sagitarius saw the dragon land the closer he got the scarier he seemed, sagitarius shivered when he landed byt tried not to be rude to the newcomer and said "Who are y-you?" He stepped forwards to the newcomer "whats your name and where are you from?" He looked down at his note book and started to draw him.

The winged lion with a scorpion's tail stared at the being before it. It looked like a wolf, but had wings and a spiked tail. A low growl rumbled in The Manitcore's throat. Perhaps it was like him, some little known, hardly cared about creature in a world dominated by those loathsome Dragons. The Manticore watched as the wolf creature stepped forward and started moving its mouth; it was speaking. Servius read its lips, Who are you? What is your name and where are you from? And then it looked at a book on the ground, started drawing. His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked over the winged wolf again. "What are you?" Servius asked in his deep, rumbling voice.

The Manticore watched the maw of the winged wolf, watched the words it formed. It is half Dragon? The poor beast. "You are half Dragon? I thought perhaps you might be some... lesser being like I." The great predator growled a little and looked down at the parchment the hybrid was drawing on. If it was half Dragon, then surely it had no hatred of them. The Manticore's hide quivered at the thought of being forced to go through life as a half Dragon. But perhaps this hybrid was like him... "What is that?" he asked with a flick of his tail to the drawing.
