Taconth, The Oddity Empty Taconth, The Oddity

Post by Taconth Sat Nov 25, 2017 11:24 pm

Taconth, The Oddity
Type of Character: Dragon
(I might have to change my username after this, if I can)
(EDIT 11/26/17: Changed special ability due to issues regarding inheritance. Might change again under influence)
(DOUBLE EDIT 8:51 PM: Yep. Also might be too long)
Personal Info
Name: Taconth (nicknames include Tac, Conker, Nutbrain and Pricklehead (those last two are insults))
Alias: The Oddity
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Mainly Heterosexual. Though he won't cringe, or feel uneasy at the thought of falling for a trap or such

Personality: Taconth, as his alias implies, is an oddity among dragons. Not just in appearance, but also somewhat in behavior
He comes down with a case of psychopathy, a clever bloke, and tends to lack much empathy, though only to low extents. Harming other dragons simply out of desire, lacking any other reason, is something he considers to be above. Manipulation of others, though, doesn't cross the line for him, and he finds pleasure in doing so. Just not to the extremities.
Taconth has a smooth demeanor, generally easygoing and has little to no care of what other dragons think, or say to him. Unless it happens to be positive, which he will gladly acknowledge, and lowkey narcissistic about it (it is a symptom of psychopathy, after all.) The big bloke can usually be seen out in the day, sunbathing like a crocodilian, enjoying some birch tree or teaching the youngsters little lessons about life. For a certain reason, there will always be a makeshift fireplace somewhere in his vicinity. If you ever see a subtle, orange glow resonating between the cracks of his splendidly formed frill, take caution before attempting to pick a fight with him. Even though Taconth is a valiant and skilled fighter, he doesn't take the role of 'Guardian' very seriously, and more or less utilizes it to gain more respect. He'd rather refer to himself as the local crazy, stating that "It's his job." His conversations consists mainly of puns and jokes, witty deductions, an occasional "Yesss..." (courtesy of Beast Wars Megatron) and insults of the dragon he faces tends to be an annoying, burden of a vermin. If you tried to insult him, he'd respond with a witty comeback. He also has a tendency to, "examine" other dragons, before or during the conversation, often circling around them rather uncomfortably. Concluding gestures, if you're a local dragon, can range from a tap on the nose to a smack up the snout depending on how annoying you are. What a weirdo.
Taconth does not take lightly to concept of "heroes" and "villains." He states that heroes exist solely to thwart others, and that they have no strategic skills, other than reaction. Without villains, he says, heroes would be stagnate, and without heroes, villains would rule. Heroes have moral, and villains have work ethic. As such, he claims that he is no hero, or villain for that matter. He is simply Taconth, with only so much moral or work ethic, and he will get what he wants.
Among his weirdest qualities to most dragons are his anatomy, his head and wings respectively. He resembles some of the other wild reptiles that roam about, and he knows it. His head is so extravagant it sometimes ends up being clumsy. So odd is it that some dragons will initially believe he's a halfbreed of some strange dragon. He even uses those wings to walk and sprint with, and takes off in a flash by propelling forward with them. He uses these qualities to trick others into believing he's a "Dragon from a Bygone Age" (which he clearly isn't, the wings are just an incredibly recessive trait. And he knows it) Other than that, he holds an addiction towards consuming plant matter. For example, he eats the leaves of oak trees as if it were a drumstick, and conifers like corn-on-the-cob (if such a thing exists in dragon culture, which I doubt anyhow) And then we dwell into his creepy obsession for collecting dragon spit, storing it in bottles kept in his pouch. Yech... good thing he isn't looking for a mate.
He does have some redeeming qualities. Taconth shows a good level of charisma once you get to know him, and will even consider you a friend. He treats said friends as if they were his siblings, something he lacked in his hatchlinghood, and possibly as a ways of coping with it. When around hatchlings or young dragons, he is put into a great sense of ease, and feels the need to protect them as if they were his own. He will often tell them little lessons that might assist them in life.
Oh, and his voice is similar to the pleasant English Actor, Gary Oldman. Seriously, the guy needs more attention.

Fears: Aside from the fear of how his death will play out, the big bloke really, REALLY dislikes goats, and any other creature belonging to the Subfamily Caprinae. Massive arachnids? Scrumptious. Manticora and Phoenix's? Big Game hunting season, yesss. But a lamb? KEEP THOSE CRITTERS AWAY. His exact reason for having such a phobia is unknown. But upon being asked the reason, he will respond with, and I quote,
"Those eyes... They never turn, and yet they're always aware of our every move..."
Another fear is losing any and all traces of his familial lineage. His special stone is a reminder, and having that taken away will put him in a constant state of unease and hopelessness (could also count as weakness)
Strengths:
Physical Strength and Endurance - He doesn't reach the record for largest FireWing, nor Dragon, but this won't halt his strength he built from many years of training (mostly from his father), and is able to take a lot of flack, be it from impact or heat, and return the favor with great physical force
Projectile Breath - Rather than a stream of fire, Taconth breathes flaming projectile balls, one per .75 seconds. The further distance they travel, they will narrow down and increase velocity, and have been recorded to travel 250 ft. When initially fired (pfft) the projectiles reach temperatures of 3000F, cooling as they travel further, down to half the original height. They spread out somewhat upon hitting a target. Initial firing speed is 57 mph, whilst max speed is 94 mph.
Balance and Sprinting - This is where his leg-wings come in. Taconth uses such peculiar wings not just to fly, but as extra walking limbs, as stated above. When sprinting, these strange wings propel him forward, in a similar fashion to his flight take-off, and can reach running speeds of 56-67 mph. This also provides him with a greater sense of balance to the earth, so attempting to flip him onto his back side or shove him around is in no way, shape or form a simple feat.
Ingenuity - His cleverness and inventive nature enables him to quickly craft up gizmos and gadgets that can assist him in combat, and life in general. One notable example are his spikey little clusters (dubbed "Pinecones of Combustion"), tightly packed sticks and straws held together with dried mud, filled with flammable materials with explosive properties, and topped with significant string or straw trailing into the interior. All it takes is a little flare, to go Boom-Boom. His cleverness also allows him to come up with live-saving strategies that may seem crazy and impractical. But anything could work, can't it?
Natural Weapons - Would be a crime if I didn't mention this somehow. Those magnificent horns, royal frill and swaying thagomizer (the end of the tail with the ouchie-bits) aren't just for display. He will effectively utilize them in combat, like any creature with those traits would, along with the rest of his body (see below.) Those spiraling horns are excellent for piercing through tough hide, and that tail will act as a naughty surprise for anyone attempting an assault from behind, and finally, the frill can act splendidly as a shield against those pesky bites and scratches. This also holds that nasty special ability of his...
Weaknesses:
Size - Of course, FireWings still come second in greatest size only to EarthWings. That being said, it makes him a target that's relatively easy to hit to smaller foes. This, paired with his natural ornaments, also reduces him to flight speeds of 38 mph. approximately
The Cold - Being a FireWing, this should be a typical weakness. Though it plays part mostly regarding his special ability (see below.) He must require heat to charge it to its fullest, and being in a state of cold temperatures will halt this process, and to extreme cases even drain it (it requires heat, obviously.) The cold of the night, thankfully, doesn't cross this line, but neither is it ineffective in halting the process, and he would rather not take his special ability into effect around dusk, where the cold of the moon spreads across the lands, or until the coming of dawn, where the heat of the sun begins to touch his hide. Or cold areas in general.
Structural Clumsiness - As impressive as his head ornaments and peculiar wing structures are, this may get in the way of things when going through narrow passageways, or when he turns his head around too swiftly, in which he may scratch himself or someone else accidentally from those spiraling horns or hexa-pointed thagomizer of his (is great in combat, though)
Loss of Lineage - As stated above, should any trace of his family be lost, he will enter a state of great uneasiness and hopelessness, and outright aggressive. This will allow other dragons to get the better of him, but be wary...
Slight Psychopathic Tendencies - Not really a weakness, but it does tend to put off a few dragons... whether or not to his dismay is his choice.

General Appearance
Height: 76 ft.
Scales: The majority of his scaling consists of bright red scales expanding across his body. Blue striped highlights mark the underside of his strangely proportioned wings, on his forearms and the leathery membrane of said wings. Running down his back to his tail are pointed ostroderms, tipped with light blue shading, and conclude with a thagomizer of six evenly sorted red-violet spikes. Running down his shoulders are five quadrilateral red scales, shaded by blueish hues, decreasing in size as they continue downwards. His underside consists of purple, crocodilian-esque quadrilateral scales reaching from his throat down to the end of the tail. His frill consists of the largest scales, light violet separated by dark-blue cracks. His spiraling horns, frill spikes and beak are sheathed in fine, grey keratin, which harden their frame for more effective use. His nostrils are not scaled, but rather leathery skin patterned with blue mottles.
Eyes: Pale yellow sclera, and reddish brown pupils
Appearance: taconth_touchup
pix image

As you can see, his structure mostly speaks for itself, if the above text didn't describe it enough.
He also carries around a pouch strapped around his neck, containing trinkets, gizmos and gadgets, and his "Pinecones of Combustion." How he even manages to apply and remove it is because it's held together by a belt near the base of the strap(s)

Tribe Information and Status
Tribe: FireWing
Inheritance: Purebreed FireWing, though some may believe otherwise.
Rank: Guardian, under his father's influence
Family: Taconth's bloodline aren't known or remembered by most anybody aside himself, but I shall state the following: His father and mother worked their hardest to care for and raise their peculiar little dragon, and Taconth honors their sacrifices and devotion most dearest. He was an only child, the other eggs in his litter having been stillborn. His mother would often lightheartedly joke about his anatomy, and his father taught him how to manipulate others. Taconth was planning to be a Scholar, though his father argued otherwise, and became a Guardian in his influence (though he doesn't take this role too seriously). Their current whereabouts are unknown, and Taconth carved a portrait of his parents into a stone, dubbed the "Pebble of Kin" which he carries around him at all times as a reminder of his parents, origin and what they have been through to raise him to this point
Mate: N/A
Hatchlings: N/A, but the presence of hatchlings is one he enjoys

Skills and Abilities
Special Abilities: If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that whatever special ability lies within him, it requires heat. Doesn't matter its source, it just requires heat in general. The sole exception is sunlight (he ain't no LightWing), and will usually resort to setting up a fire near him. Upon reaching maximum charge, the cracks in his frill will resonate with an orange glow, which intensifies when he gets increasingly agitated. This seldom happens anyways, but it can still be done. Whether at his command, or upon someone crossing the line for him, his horns will be set ablaze, eyes devoid of their iris and pupil, triggering his ability. When in affect, he will be able to travel at much greater speeds (89-91 mph. respectively), leaving a trail of flames in his wake, radiating heat as though he were composed of molten rock, be granted increased agility, often forming into a mass of flames between dodges and when travelling, and his projectile breath will be fired thrice as quickly (0.25 seconds per shot.(though general speed won't be affected)) Destructive and ultimately powerful as this ability may seem, it has its issues. One, he is ground to the earth. Implying that flight would take too much energy to carry out, and sharply decrease how long he stays in this form ( which is approximately 5 minutes max) Secondly, though he still maintains control over his body, his psychopathy and aggression will spike to the extremities and lose awareness of thought or actions, and will not be able to shift back until he's depleted of his ability's energy. Thirdly, he stands out like a lightbulb deep in a cave in this form, as if he weren't already easy to spot, and is impossible to miss visually. Finally, contact with cold will gradually weaken his form, while contact with water will damage him on the spot (even if it also evaporates), and cannot and absolutely MUST NOT be submerged in this liquid, if he respects how long he lives. Lava is fine, but it's basically just molten rock, so... yeh. When he finally DOES retake his original form, he will retreat to the nearest source of intense heat. In a secluded area if he's already there. The more intense the heat, the faster he recharges his ability, and being within the vicinity of volcanic activity will allow him to charge most efficiently.
Combat Style: Taconth's style is full body combat. Implying he will utilize every inch of his structure and anatomy, not just his weaponized features, to his advantage to overwhelm his opponents. Whether it be pummeling them to the ground with his leg-wings, crushing them under his chest and torso, or trampling them until they are covered in his tracks, with quick and fluid transitions between actions. He seldom uses his fire breath on land, rather utilizing it in aerial combat. Taconth will also utilize his wings in combat outside of flight, quickly unfolding them to distract the foe. Similiarly to a peacock, I must say.

Background
History: As stated above, he had caring, hardworking parents, and he carries around a special stone as a reminder. Taconth, in his youth, had a long history of being bullied by his own FireWing peers, due to his appearance. When his parents stepped in and consoled him about the matter, it gave him the confidence to take back at his verbal aggressors, not with violence, but with words and witty comebacks. From there, he also learned he could manipulate his peers into believing the ideals he wishes them too, and thus sparked his psychopathy. After he reached adulthood, his parents vanished to a location that only Taconth was told (for whatever strange reason even he wasn't told. They left him before he could ask, and it still bewilders him to this day), and carved it into the back of his "Pebble of Kin" as a reminder. It was around this time he vanished for a period of time too, probably just wandering about the globe if there was much to spare, and only now decides to show his face to his tribe once more and take up the role of Guardian... though he'll probably only be the guardian of random dragon hatchlings or whatever.
RP Sample: this will inevitably unveil my fail
Taconth, the 'Oddity', was walking in circles, staring and glancing around at the features of his newfound conversationee, so to speak. Usually, this would be a rather uncomforting act on the examinee's part, though Taconth had no consideration regarding their comfort. Finally, after three awkward minutes that felt like hours, the peculiarly proportioned dragon sat down, directly in front of his encounter a fair distance away.
"Greetings, sir. Such a lovely morning it is, yessss." Spoke the FireWing, slurring his last word, somewhat akin to a python. He reached his forearm back for something, returning it with a decently sized pine-tree, plucked straight from the earth sometime earlier. It was already devoid of its foliage around the top.
"Care for some conifer?" Taconth asked politely, before pulling it towards his maws, stripping it of its leaves in a few chomps anyways. The FireWing tossed the leafless tree, or what was left of it, back where he retrieved it from, poking his claws inbetween his teeth to pluck out those remaining bits. "Now, you may be asking yourself in your head by now, 'why is it that this dragon is acting so weirdly? And why is he eating plants?' Well, that is a question with a simple answer." The strange dragon perked his head up and breathed in, holding it for approximately three seconds, before facing the dragon yet again, ultimately answering the question.

"I am the local crazy dragon."

"It's my job."

Wow, that took longer than I anticipated. Any advice and suggestions for improvement and simplification will be greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful day, you smeerps!

Pretty nice app. However, your special ability is a bit of a problem. Your special ability would be a LightWing ability, since it involves harnessing sunlight into a light-based attack, which only LightWings can do. So if you want to have this ability, you'll need to have LightWing heritage, just keep in mind that your ability will be weaker depending on how much LightWing blood you have. For example, being 50% LightWing means your ability would be stronger than if you were, say, 20% Or, if you want to remain a purebred FireWing, then you just need to come up with a fire based ability.

Mmm, understood. Should've looked more into LightWings before I put that in, silly me. Does the concept of transforming into a floating collection of smoke and ashes sound more fire-based to you, or do you have any other ideas? Until then, I'll rewrite the app with that ability in mind.

The description is almost NightWing-y but acceptable. Keep in mind that you're not going to be that stealthy as a mass of ash and smoke, which one could easily smell unless. One more thing, what is the size of his fireballs and how fast do they travel?

Okay, keeping that in mind. Going to try one more thing, perhaps...
When initially fired from the mouth, their volume would make them large enough to fit into the palms of his hands/foretalons. Like if you held an American football that was actually spherical, or a basketball that was smaller than usual. Initial speed is approximately 94 mph, and the fastest they can travel is 183 mph. Keyword fastest.
EDIT: Is the special ability any more fitting/better by now?

183mph is a too fast; even a SkyWing wouldn't be able to dodge them. 94mph can be the max. The special ability is fine, but you can't use the sun as a heat source to charge it. That would still make it a LightWing ability. Also, what is TL;DR?

Understood. Initial firing speed will be reduced to 57 mph, then. Will also edit that last note in, with a few other changes.
If you didn't know already, it just means Too Long; Didn't Read (in case some people just wanted a simplified summary rather than a wall of info, as I felt it was too lengthy regarding a single ability). If you already knew what that meant and were just looking for it, and I sound stupid/giving you a Toad, it is the following (will apply orange color after posting): His body is set on fire, he becomes (literaly) crazy with power and abilities, but he can't fly, change back until he's tired, or touch cold or water, he's easy to spot, and also must recharge with heat that cannot be gained via sunlight (that last part will be edited in as well)

Oh, I see. Well you don't need to do that. A lengthy description of your abilities is better than a quick summary that doesn't really tell you anything about them. So just remove that.

Excellent point, sir. Removing now.

And in regards to approval. Apologies if this sounds impatient, all this editing is getting somewhat tedious on my side of things. But all in the name of progress, I say. Is there anything left to change in this application, or is it all tidy and well to get past the virtual commons by now?

Yeah, I suppose it can get tedious, but it's just to make sure your character works with our lore, specifically when it comes to abilities. But now that everything has been has been taken care of....
